Appearance

Newborn caterpillars are black with yellow spots. Later, they turn reddish-brown with black dots. The color of the older caterpillars is from light green to bluishgreen. The outgrowths on the caterpillar's body are light yellow and bluewhite. The caterpillar is covered with hairs.

Adults are light greenish blue with a raised and sparse scale cover. The eyes are small, mostly with a fine black frame (although this is sometimes absent). The inner half of the eye is narrower than the outer one. The apex of the hindwings is usually pointed.The wingspan of these butterflies is up to 110 mm.

Habitat

It is found in Japan and the Russian Far East.

Behavior

Flight time is from May to July.Actias gnomaprefers mixed and deciduous forests.

Diet

Caterpillars feed on Alnus species.

Reproduction

For their reproduction you need a terrarium with a size of 50 x 50 x 70 cm.The female lays her eggs on the branches of a birch tree.The duration of incubation is 10-14 days. Incubation at a humidity of 50-70% and a temperature of 22-24°C.If the newborn caterpillars do not begin to feed, they should be placed for 1-2 days in a dark place. The caterpillars should be kept in mesh terrariums for 6-8 insects. A birch branch should be placed in the terrarium. Forage plants should be replaced every 3-4 days. The caterpillar develops for 4-5 weeks. Then the caterpillar weaves a cocoon, in which it pupates. The butterfly leaves the cocoon after about four weeks, depending on the temperature and humidity.The butterfly's life span is 10-12 days.

In captivity

The mesh terrarium with a size of 50 × 50 × 70 mm is suitable for keeping butterflies. Room temperature is necessary. Adult butterflies of this species do not feed and live off the stocks accumulated during the larval period.
