Trachypithecus auratus

Javan lutung, orJavan langur, orEbony leaf monkey(Trachypithecus auratus)

Phylumchordata
Class — mammalia
Order — primates
Family — cercopithecidae

Genus –trachypithecus

Appearance

The body length of these monkeys is from 44 to 65 cm, with the tail (61-87 cm) longer than the body; the weight is about 7 kg.

A distinctive feature of Javan langurs is the variety of colors within one small group: from black to golden-orange or brown. Young Javan langurs are born bright red, but darken with age until their fur is almost black. However, this happens not very often – some monkeys remain red for life.

Habitat

It is found on and endemic to the island of Java, as well as on several of the surrounding Indonesian islands.

Behavior

This primate is diurnal and arboreal.

Like other langurs, the Javan langur is a social animal, living in groups of around seven individuals, with one or two adult males in the group. Although they will look after offspring of other mothers as well as their own, adult females are aggressive towards females from other groups. The brighter coloring of juveniles may alert females to their presence and ensures that they will always be noticed and protected.

Diet

Its diet is primarily herbivorous, eating leaves, fruit, flowers, and flower buds, although it also eats insect larvae. It has evolved a specialized stomach to digest plant material more efficiently. This species also has enlarged salivary glands to assist it in breaking down food.

Reproduction

This species has no discernible mating season and females produce one offspring at a time.

In captivity

Life expectancy in captivity is up to 30 years.

They are kept in cages or spacious cages, the entire volume of which should be occupied by ropes, ladders, hammocks, which are attached to the grid from above. This is necessary because langurs spend almost all the time on branches and do not like to go down to the ground. Underfloor heating should notbe flat, but with a lot of steps and ledges, which are convenient to place primates. It is better to cover the walls with wide boards, and plaster the bottom.

The difficulty in keeping of these rain forest dwellers is their special food. They eat almost exclusively green foliage, flowers, and buds of several tree species.
